What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a practice consisting of a set of techniques applied to the body. It is often referred to as having a holistic approach. This means that its therapeutic intention is based on an ample and profound knowledge of the systems and mechanisms in our body and understanding that these work together to maintain a balance. Our nervous, linfatic, muscular or circulatory system are examples of these systems. It is therefore a profession based entirely on the study and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Through what we define as osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), our work consists in aiding the body to redirect misaligned or altered structures which can cause both physical and emotional manifestations so that these don’t evolve towards more advanced, pathologic states.
Both in it’s study and practise, osteopathy is organised in three main branches: structural osteopathy, visceral osteopathy and cranial osteopathy. In an osteopathy session, the therapist might use, or not, any of these approaches as these aren’t exclusive but complementary.
